The weekend heralded the return of Premier League football, but Non-League games up and down the country provided plenty of excitement to match.
Tranmere Rovers continued their impressive start to the season, making it three wins in as many games, courtesy of a 90th minute James Norwood winner against Eastleigh. There were impressive away wins for Sutton United, Macclesfield Town and Maidstone United all by a 3-1 scoreline. Recently relegated Dagenham and Redbridge beat Guiseley to kick start their campaign whilst a brace from Louis Almond grabbed three points for Southport against strugglers Woking.
NATIONAL LEAGUE – NORTH
Plenty of goals this weekend, with at least four games showcasing at least four goals. Bankrolled Salford City routed Staybridge Celtic 0-4, Gloucester City and Darlington recorded 4-1 home wins against Gainsborough Trinity and Boston United respectively.The Pilgrims are rooted to the bottom of the league, having conceded 7 goals and only scoring one in three games. League leaders FC Halifax Town cemented their place at the top with a 3-0 victory over Worcester City.
NATIONAL LEAGUE – SOUTH
Weston-super-Mare made it three wins in three, with a comfortable 0-2 win away to Welling United, condemning The Wings to their third straight loss in the league. Having been relegated from the National League last season, things are looking bleak already for the Londoners. Recently promoted Hungerford Town remain undefeated after drawing 1-1 with Ebbsfleet United. Hemel Hempstead Town won their first game of the season, defeating Oxford City 2-0 at Vauxhall Road. Concord Rangers remain rooted to the foot of the table after a 2-0 home loss to Truro City.
Goals galore on the opening day of the Ryman season, the best viewing being at Imber Court, where Staines Town thumped Met Police 6-1. So bad was the Police showing, The Swans were 4-0 up in under 25 minutes. Folkestone Invicta celebrated their return to Ryman Premier football by beating Harrow Town 3-0, whilst 321 people witnessed Worthing run out 0-3 winners against Hendon, Reis Stanilas getting on the scoresheet twice. Nothing could separate AFC Sudbury and Dulwich Hamlet, a 2-2 scoreline ensuring that both teams shared the spoils. Three first half goals ensured Tonbridge Angels took all three points against Wingate and Finchley.
RYMAN DIV ONE – NORTH
Only 57 people were at The Mill Field to see Aveley beat Ware 5-2, whilst Haringey Borough beat Dereham Town 3-0, Chris Benjamin scoring twice. Phoenix Sports emerged victorious over Brentwood Town, Steve Carvell scoring twice, after Billy Medlock had opened the scoring. Romford drew 0-0 with AFC Hornchurch, as did Soham Town Rangers and Witham Town. Great Wakering Rovers lost 1-3 to Norwich United and ended the game with 10 men, after Adedalberto Pinto was shown a red card.
RYMAN DIV ONE- SOUTH
Hastings United kicked off the season with a 4-1 win over Surrey based South Park. Cray Wanderers drew 3-3 with Sittingbourne. Ricky Korboa struck twice for Carshalton Athletic as they ran out 1-3 winners against Horsham. Corinthian Casuals beat Whyteleafe 2-1 in front of an attendance of 143. Greenwich Borough started life in the division with a 0-1 loss to Dorking Wanderers. A bumper crowd of 210 saw Ramsgate beat islanders Guernsey 2-1, Joe Taylor bagging a brace.
