This morning, Tranmere Rovers owner Mark Palios announced that Gary Brabin was no longer in charge. The statement released on the club’s website followed a 1-0 away defeat to league newcomers Sutton United.

At first glance it seems a strange decision to let a manager go who has guided a team to 5th place, and only 4 points of top spot, but for many this is the right decision. Brabin joined the Birkenhead club in the summer of 2015 following their relegation from League Two. The board had hoped he’d be able to bounced the former Division One side (Today’s Championship) straight back into League football, but last season Brabin could only manage a sixth place finish.

Despite gaining a respectable win percentage in the 40’s, Palios decided it was time for a fresh approach. For some fans this has not come soon enough. Social media had been awash with supports calling for Brabin to step aside. There has been considerable credit given to the quality of players he has managed to bring in, and with 6 wins out of 11 there is the suggestion that Brabin was on the right track for promotion. However, there have been rumours that he has lost the dressing room and the team are fortunate to find themselves in the play-off places.

Tranmere are desperate to get back where they feel they belong. Palio has acted decisively to stop what he saw as a rot. Only time will tell if this is the right decision.
